This thread will go over the basics to war attacks using dragons. These work for all levels of dragons and if you have the spare elixir, you should be using them for every attack. As always if there are effective attacks or tips that I miss, feel free to add it in a comment.
10 dragons + 1 CC dragon + all lightning spells: This is the most effective dragon strategy throughout the dragon levels, once you get into tougher bases rage/heal spells sometimes are more effective depending on the enemy's base. The gist of this strategy is to locate the hardest to reach air defense (taking into account building obstacles with storages being more difficult to transgress and air sweepers), lightning the difficult air defense, then spam dragons to take out the remaining air defense along with the rest of the base. Sometimes it is better to hold one or two dragons in reserve just in case the rest of your dragons circle around the town hall without touching it. Dragons go for the next closest building (unless there are enemy units attacking nearby) and fly towards them, but not always directly towards them which makes dragons unpredictable. That reserve dragon can be the difference between a 92% with 1 star and 88% with 2 stars if you happen to not wipe the whole base out. An example by Grant
10 dragons + 1 CC dragon + 3 rage spells or 1 heal / 2 rage spells: If you've upgraded rage spell a couple times, this strategy can be used when there isn't any good way to go about destroying one and wiping out the rest with unenraged dragons. Simply pick a side or corner closest to the most air defenses, drop your dragons and watch them fan out. Depending on how they fly timing may vary here, but drop your heal spell when they hit heavy fire and Rage when they're having trouble getting through something while under fire and try to rage as many dragons at once as possible.
8 or 9 dragons + 1 CC dragon + a giant/archer mix of some kind + your favorite spell combo: This is used when you want to be careful with the enemies clan castle troops. Especially when facing level 5+ clans, clan castle troops can rip through your army and change the flow of your dragons even if they don't kill anything. Before you attack with your dragons, lure out the troops either with an archer or a giant if there's no close to edge access that an archer can pull from. Kite the troops to an edge or corner of the map (preferably the one that you plan to deploy your dragons from) by sending one archer at a time from that corner or edge, then kill it with the rest of the archers [don't build a giant if you don't need it to lure]. After that's done, precede with the other strategies minus one or two dragons.
Tips: Try to place your spells so part of the circle of influence is on them as well as where they're going to be to maximize its effect. Upgrade the spells that you're using the most of. Sometimes placing a few dragons to destroy outlying buildings can funnel the rest to where you actually want to destroy; sometimes that blows up in your face and you only get one star ...dragons are stupid =)

Supplementation to dragon attacks: There are times when your lightning spells can't take out all the air defenses and you just want to ensure that everything goes smoothly. If there's an air defense that's surrounded by buildings but easily accessible by hogs (and especially if it has little ground defense coverage on it), hogs may help clear that pesky trap away so it doesn't whittle your dragons down when they reach it's range. Lightning one as always, hog the other and let your dragons rampage. The things you should keep in mind is that hogs are not meant to tank heavy fire and go for any defensive building, not just the one you want them to go for. This means that if you're using a small force of hogs, they need to take out whatever you need them to take out quickly or they'll die with little headway. If there's a maze of other defensive buildings they have to make it through first, you may wish to think about not using hogs at all. Here's an example of a high level Dragon attack with hog supplement.
